Enlarged Pores

Our bodies produce sebum, an oily secretion to protect our skin from dying out and to make the skin waterproof. Researchers have found that people who tend to have more active sebaceous glands (hence more sebum), seem to have larger pores. This is especially so when you do not put in effort to clean your skin and clear your pores. When sebum and dead skin cells accumulate in your skin, your skin swells and the pores will look larger than they actually are.

People usually associate large pores with acne. This is not necessarily true because if you have large pores and you are very disciplined in taking care of your skin health, your pores are well-regulated and no bacteria will reside and grow in the pores.

Another possible cause of large pores could be due to age. As you become older, your skin loses its elasticity and may cause pores to look larger. Frequent exposure to the sun compromise the quality of your skin and may cause the pores to be enlarged.

Fortunately, there are several treatments to address these issues to reduce pore size, and help give your skin a smoother appearance.

Know Your Problems

  • Everyone has approximately 5 million pores on their skin. When enlarged, they can be unsightly, and cause problems such as difficulty in putting on makeup.
  • Treatments are aimed at reducing oil production on the skin, and stimulating collagen through lasers and other devices.
