Golden Ratio To Measure Beauty: How Accurate Is It?
Picture someone whom you think is attractive and imagine her skin, face, body and clothes. Chances are, what you picture is probably very different from the lady below – she was considered beautiful, 200 years ago.
Our perception of beauty keeps changing over time. What we deem as beautiful and attractive is largely influenced by the media. Before the rise of social media, we constructed our myopic view of what makes a person attractive by what we saw in magazines and movies. The role of traditional media evolved drastically with the proliferation of social media. Celebrities who were once glamorised and could only be admired from afar are now chronicling their lives on social media – thanks to Twitter, FaceBook and Instagram. This intimate relationship celebrities have with their viewers are creating a warped perception that, they too, can be like their “role models”.
Theory of the Golden Ratio
So what makes someone beautiful? The truth is, even though beauty is defined largely by race, culture and era, there are some characteristics about physical beauty that people across ages and cultures agree with, since the beginning of time.
The Golden Ratio is a theory which is used extensively to explain what makes someone beautiful. The theory states that our perception of beauty can be logically explained mathematically – we perceive the proportion 1:618 as beautiful, and this is what we call the “golden ratio”. Stephen Marquart took this theory one step further by developing a mask. According to him, people whose faces fit into this mask, are aesthetically beautiful.
The ideal face is about 1.5 times longer than it is wide. The forehead hairline to the middle of the eyes, the middle of the eyes to the bottom of the nose, and from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin should be of equal proportion. To make a person more attractive, the length of the ear should be equal to the length of the nose, and the width of an eye should be equal to the width between the eyes.
Fitting a ‘perfect’ face nicely into Marquart Beauty Mask also means having a pair of lifted eyes, straight nose bridge, correct thickness of the lips, prominent chin and having a strong jawline to frame a V-shaped face.
The Art of Conforming Faces to the Golden Ratio
The golden ratio is not the only measure of beauty, but it gives doctors a useful tool when performing aesthetic treatments. “Having an eye for detail with a keen appreciation of beauty that conforms to the golden ratio is key to bringing out the best in my patients. When you choose a clinic for your aesthetic treatment, it is important to know that you are in the hands of an experienced doctor who knows how to enhance your natural beauty.” says Dr Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics.
Although undergoing the knife is a viable option for more dramatic changes, many prefer not to because of the downtime. “Most of us don’t require to undergo major surgeries to look more attractive. Some treatments to reshape the facial features and regular treatments to delay signs of aging are already enough to make a difference to how you look.”, Dr. Siew adds.
Lifting for a V-Shaped Face and Stronger Jawline
Ulthera Facial Slimming
WHAT Ulthera Facial Slimming uses High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to heat the deep, fat layers of the skin to tighten the skin and melt stubborn facial fats at the same time. The skin tightening effect should last at least one year. Undergoing repeated treatments before the effects wear off will prolong the skin lifting effects.
Silhouette Soft Thread Lift
WHAT Also known as the “lunchtime facelift”, Silhouette Soft Thread Lift is a 21st century non-surgical facelift which can be done in less than 90 minutes. This minimally invasive treatment is done with local anaesthesia. Each threads carefully and precisely inserted under the skin at the jaw. The threads end near the temple which will dramatically lift sagging skin.
In addition to the lifting properties that Silhouette Soft delivers, this amazing, convenient treatment also ensures your body continues its rejuvenate effects by stimulating your skin to product collagen over the next few months to restore volume and shapeliness to your face.
Through lifting of the cheeks, we restore the curves to the face, conforming them to the golden ratio.
Eye Lifting Treatments to Attain A Pair of Youthful Eyes
WHAT Droopy eyelids make the eyes smaller, defying the ratios which the Marquart Beauty Mask lays down. Using an advanced Korean technology, Eyelid Resus only requires local anaesthesia to be administered at the treatment area, resulting in a comfortable and fuss-free treatment. Radiofrequency waves are introduced into the area to stimulate collagen production and remodelling. You will see your eyes lifted in less than a week.
Redefinition of Facial Features: Nose, Chin, Lips
WHAT Having a defined, high nose bridge with a round tip almost always makes a person look more attractive. According to the Marquart Beauty Mask and golden ratio, the width of the nose should be approximately the same as the distance between the eyes. The length of the nose should be approximately a third of the total height of the face.
Using Polydioxanone (PDO) threads, we can nose improve nose height and length. The threads are inserted into the tip of the nose and the columella to give the nose the projection required for a sharper nose.
Because of its convenience and the short amount of time required to complete this treatment, it is commonly known as a “lunchtime nose job”. The threads are compatible with our bodies and they will be absorbed over time. This treatment encourages production of collagen in the treated area, with results lasting at least one year.
WHAT A proportionate chin is essential for a beautiful. The ideal proportions of the lower face – chin and lips, follow the Golden Ratio. Asians often have chins which are too short, or receded, resulting in a less balanced cafe. Using fillers, we are able to to sculpt the chin, to achieve these ideal proportions.
WHAT In order to fit the golden ratio of 1:1.618, the lower lip is supposed to be 1.618 times thicker than the top lip. In other words, your top lip should be one-third the size of your bottom lip. At Radium Medical Aesthetics, Filler Lip Redefinition uses hyaluronic acid to contour the lips and make them more luscious and defined. This treatment can last for at least one year and repeated treatments will prolong the results.
