There are many things we miss about our teenage years such as going to friends’ parties and making new friends. But one thing for sure, you won’t miss the acne and pimples all over your face. For the unfortunate few, they still experience full blown adult acne outbreak when they are well into their adulthood.
Based on clinical studies conducted by The International Dermal Institute, they have found that between 40 and 55% of the adult population below the age of 40 are diagnosed with persistent acne and oily skin. According to the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, 54% of the women above 25 years old suffer from acne.
Why Do We Get Adult Acne?
There are many reasons why you never seem to outgrow acne.
Precipitated by hormones, acne can occur at any stage in our lives. There can be several factors that aggravate adult acne:
HORMONAL CHANGES Fluctuation in testosterone causes oil production to increase. If the sebum on your face is not managed properly, it can cause clogged pores and acne bacteria will start to grow. This leads to inflammation and pimples.
STRESS Stress is a major contributing factor for adult acne. Although it is still not entirely clear to scientists how stress worsens acne, they have found out that sebum-producing cells are more active when someone is experiencing high levels of stress. This means that more oil is produced resulting in hair follicles and pores to be clogged by dead skin cells and sebum.
DIET Your diet plays a very important role in determining the sebum regulation in your body. Food that are high in sugar and simple carbohydrates can lead to a spike in your blood sugar levels. Consuming sugar can trigger inflammatory response in your body and subsequently, an acne outbreak. There are some foods that are known to trigger acne outbreak such as dairy products, sweets, and greasy food.
How Do We Get Rid of Adult Acne?
We know it is embarrassing and distressing to have red, active acne with pus oozing from your face when you are meeting clients. Fortunately, Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics shares with us some tips on how to get rid of adult acne and improve your skin texture to regain a smooth and clear complexion.
Tip #1: Avoid Products with Harsh Chemicals
The most important thing is to go to the bathroom and take a closer look at the skincare products you are using. Inspect the ingredient list and figure out if any of those ingredients are doing more harm than good for your skin. “Your alarm bells should be ringing if you spot ingredients such as SD alcohol or denatured alcohol in your skincare products. These are usually added to your products to give you a quick-drying finish and it immediately removes the oil from your skin.” says Dr. Siew. “This is why people with adult acne often buy these products as it is appealing to them”.
In general, alcohol dries and irritates your skin. It may also aggravate your acne, making them redder and more inflamed.
Replace your daily cleanser with one that does not contain any alcohol and fragrance. Fragrance may sometimes also irritate your skin. Ideally, your daily cleanser should contain ingredients such as retinol and vitamin C.
Tip #2: Choose Your Food Wisely
Drink more water. Staying hydrated is the foundation of healthy and clear skin. Try to aim for 8 glasses of water a day.
Cut back on sugary food. It may be challenging to totally cut off sugar from our diet but we should make an effort to reduce eating processed carbohydrates as such white rice, white bread, sweets, cakes, desserts and milk chocolate. Sugar causes inflammation in our bodies and it will aggravate acne outbreak, including a long list of other health problems.
Stop consuming dairy products because dairy consumption has been linked to increased acne. To make matters worse, recent studies have shown that consuming protein from animals leads to higher incidents of cancer.
Eat more green, leafy vegetables, berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries), dark chocolate, green tea, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acid can be found in fatty fish such as salmon and tuna. Walnuts and flaxseeds are also able to tame inflammation and reduce acne outbreak.
Tip #3: LED Blue Light
For many years, doctors have used blue light therapy to eliminate acne bacteria in patients’ skin. The bacteria have pigments in their protective cell membranes that resonate at the same frequency of the blue light. When the membrane breaks down, the pigments break down and eventually destroying the bacteria.
In Radium Medical Aesthetics, Healite LED Blue uses Optical Lens Array Technology (OLAT) to effectively harness and deliver the energy to provide maximum therapeutic outcome for the patient with acne.
This painless, convenient treatment is suitable for people who do not want to undergo any drug therapy as it is completely safe.
Tip #4: Exfoliation Is Key
It is the most important thing you should do on a regular basis if you want to treat adult acne successfully. One of the reasons why people get acne outbreak is because of the build-up of the dead skin cells on the face. It makes it difficult for excess oil to be removed from your face. The clogged oil, together with the dead skin cells will encourage the growth of bacteria, which will lead to acne outbreak.
Thus, exfoliation is key in reducing outbreaks by keeping the pores from becoming clogged with sebum and dead skin cells.
Depending on your skin condition, you can choose either a physical or a chemical exfoliant. Physical exfoliants leave our skin feeling soft and smooth, but may not be the best choice for acne-prone skin. A chemical exfoliant dissolves the dead skin cells with an acid or enzyme. Some common chemical exfoliants include: glycol, lactic, salicylic, Retin-A, Differin etc.
Alternatively, you can opt for a chemical peel treatment to effectively remove the dead cells. The doctor applies a thin layer of strong acid on your face to effectively remove the dead cells.
Tip #5: Seek Medical Treatment
If your adult acne condition is beyond control, perhaps it’s time to consider going to the doctor to have it assessed.
The doctor may recommend you undergo some treatment to reduce the acne or he may prescribe some medication for you.
At Radium Medical Aesthetics, we have a unique program designed by Dr. Siew to combat acne. Acne Clear Ultimate Program is an intensive, 10-session treatment that spans over two-and-a-half months to reduce oil production, remove dead skin cells, eliminate acne-causing bacteria and stimulate cell reproduction.
For those who don’t want to undergo such a long and intensive program, they can opt for a 4-week Acne Clear Program that does not have any laser treatment. It is a mild facial program to eradicate pimples and improve clogged pores.
