Everything You Need to Know About PDO Thread Lift

Most people notice signs of aging when they hit the big 4-0. Their skin becomes thin and excess skin seems to hang loosely from your face. This happens because the skin loses collagen and elastin fibers and becomes more fragile.

Medical aesthetics has developed by leaps and bounds over the years. When people talk about skin lifting treatment, it does not only refer to surgical face lifting procedure. Non-surgical face lifting treatment is gaining in popularity in the past couple of years. Offered by many medical aesthetic clinics in Singapore, non-surgical face lifting treatment can help restore facial contour and lift sagging skin on the face and neck.

Radium Medical Aesthetics, a medical aesthetic clinic based in Singapore, offers PDO Thread Lift to combat sagging skin. Dr Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics tells us more about what you need to know about PDO Thread Lift.

What Is PDO Thread Lift?

PDO Thread Lift is a non-surgical skin lifting treatment that involves the insertion of a blunt cannula with a dissolvable thread made of polydioxanone (PDO) into different layers of the skin or subcutaneous fat under the skin.

When inserted under the skin at different layers, the thread provides an immediate lifting effect to pull the loose skin together. At the same time, the PDO thread is able to trigger our natural self-healing capabilities to induce an inflammatory reaction, resulting in stimulation and generation of collagen. Collagen stimulation is beneficial because high levels of collagen in the skin is usually associated with young-looking and firm skin.

PDO threads stay anchored in the face for about 9 months after the treatment. After that, the threads would dissolve but the skin will still stay lifted in its position. The lifting and plumping effects will continue to be visible for another 12 months, depending on individual.

Why Does PDO Thread Lift Skin So Effectively?

The special dissolvable sutures come in different types that are often used for PDO Thread Lift procedures.

PDO threads

Mono threads are smooth threads without any anchors (barbs and cogs). Many threads are placed perpendicularly in a mesh-like manner. This is done to encourage collagen stimulation so that the skin becomes firmer and tighter. Not much visible lifting effect can be seen with the use of mono threads.

Screw threads are two mono threads wound around in a needle. Screw threads are great for providing a volumizing effect on sunken areas of the face such as the cheeks.

Cog threads are perhaps the most commonly used PDO threads by doctors. Cog threads are mono threads that have barbs lined on the threads to anchor to the underside of the skin. These barbs form a support structure or scaffold to lift and compress sagging tissue. These barbs encourage the formation of collagen. Cog threads are typically used by doctors for lifting around the lower face and to give the V-shape face that most people desire.

What Is the Difference Between Silhouette Soft Thread Lift and PDO Thread Lift?

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift procedure uses threads made of polylactic acid (PLA). Just like PDO, the threads dissolve after a few months and they help to stimulate collagen production. According to some studies, PLA stimulates Type 1 collagen synthesis and this skin lifting effect brought about by Silhouette Soft Thread Lift can last for 2 years or more.

On the other hand, PDO Thread Lift is a material used by surgeons for surgical sutures. This material is completely bio-compatible. It dissolves in the body after 6 to 9 months. Doctors are moving away from mono threads to barbed threads as they induce more inflammatory response, causing more collagen production. As a result, the skin lifting result is more pronounced.

Can PDO Thread Lift Be Combined with Other Skin Lifting Treatments?

PDO Thread Lift procedure can provide visible skin lifting result. However, if combined with other skin lifting treatments such as Silhouette Soft Thread Lift, Ultherapy Skin Lifting, or dermal filler treatment (Liquid Facelift), longer-lasting result can be achieved.

How Result Can Be Expected After A PDO Thread Lift Procedure?

PDO threads especially the screw and cog types provide excellent support to lift sagging skin. The bio-compatible PDO threads anchor the sagging skin and lift them to their new lifted position.

At the same time, the skin will continue to undergo rejuvenative effects by stimulating collagen production to improve the elasticity and firmness of the skin. 9 months after the treatment, the PDO threads would have dissolved and the skin will continue to stay in its lifted position. You can expect the wrinkles and fine lines to reduce in appearance and facial contours will become more defined.
