Nose Thread Lift: Frequently Asked Questions

Without a doubt, a sharp nose immediately captures the attention of people to your face. It does not matter what ethnicity or nationality you are, a sharp, defined nose is always a symbol of perfection.

In the past, when people talk about augmenting the nose, they are usually referring to traditional rhinoplasty. It usually involves going under the knife to correct and reconstruct the nose by separating the nasal skin and the soft tissues to correct them. No matter how experienced the surgeon may be, a rhinoplasty has associated surgical risks.

Thanks to advanced medical technology, non-surgical nose thread lift is gaining popularity in Singapore over the past couple of years. It is a convenient way of enhancing the nose and improving its contours – non-surgically.

“I see an increase in the number of people coming to me for nose thread lift over the last few months.” says Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics. “With this non-surgical treatment, it has become very easy for anyone to achieve a defined nose.”, he continues.

Thinking of giving nose thread lift a try? Here are some frequently asked questions that you may have:

What Are Nose Threads Made of? Are They Safe?

The threads that doctors use for nose thread lift are made of polydioxanone (PDO). PDO is a synthetic absorbable thread that surgeons use to stitch wounds after a surgery. It is completely safe and bio-compatible with the human body.

About 6 months after the nose thread lift treatment, the threads will fully dissolve and your nose will continue to stay in its lifted position for another 8 to 12 months.

Is There a Risk of Blindness After the Nose Thread Lift Treatment?

The risk of causing blindness from undergoing a nose thread lift treatment is almost non-existent – unlike dermal filler treatment.

Dermal fillers have been used to perform nose augmentation by doctors for many years. Even though with many years of experience, some doctors prefer not to perform nose filler treatment because of the risk of vascular complications such as skin necrosis and even blindness caused by fillers.

On the other hand, nose thread lift using PDO threads are inserted using blunt cannulas to achieve the desired height and projection of the nose by building a scaffold using the threads. Results of nose thread lift are impressive and there is virtually no risk of blindness.

Why Are Some Nose Thread Lift Results Not Great?

If you have any doubt about the treatment, you should clarify with the doctor and make sure you are confident of the doctor’s skills and experience before you decide to proceed with the treatment.

“Although nose thread lift is a pretty straightforward treatment, the outcome may still be different between choosing a doctor who has more experience over another.” says Dr. Siew.

It takes an experienced doctor to determine the number of threads required in order to see the desired outcome. Apart from the doctor’s skills and experience, the result of the treatment is also dependent on the following:

  • Thickness of threads
  • Length of threads
  • Type of anchor on the threads (commonly known as cog)
  • Number of threads used

The right thickness and the type of cog present on the thread are important in influencing the outcome of the nose augmentation. If these conditions are not met, the nose thread lift treatment only firms the nose but does not provide the height and projection which the patient want.

How Many Sessions Are Needed to See Result?

One treatment is enough to see visible result. With the correct type of threads used and correct placement of the threads, you should be able to see good result after one treatment. The threads will remain in the nose for 6 months. When they dissolve, the nose will remain in its lifted position for another 8 to 12 months because of the stimulation of collagen from the threads.

If repeated regularly, you may see result lasting for up to 24 months or even longer, depending on individual.
