What are acne scars?
Acne scars are permanent indentations on the skin that are caused by the severe acne.
When acne heals, you may sometimes see red or brown marks left on the skin. This should not be confused with acne scarring. The red and brown marks left behind on the skin are known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or commonly referred to as ‘PIH’.
PIH commonly occurs after there is trauma to the skin. People with darker skin color has more pigments (melanin) so there is a higher chance of occurrence of PIH when there is damage done to the skin. Such pigmentations are best treated with customised programs that target stubborn pigmentation such as Skin Illumination Programme.
Why do acne scars form?
Superficial acne generally heal better than severe ones because they do not damage the collagen present deep in the skin.
In severe acne, acne cysts are formed, destroying deep skin tissue which is not replaced during the natural healing process. When the cysts are drained and the area heals, it usually leaves behind a depressed scar on the face.
Acne scars on the face can be categorised into:
BOXCAR SCARS These scars are often found on the cheeks and forehead. They are usually characterised by their sharp, defined edges. They can be shallow or deep, depending on the trauma your skin experienced and the healing process of your skin.
ICE PICK SCARS are deep and narrow scars. They often extend into the deeper layers of the skin. Fractional lasers are not very effective for treatment ice pick scars. They resemble damage done to the skin if punctured by an ice pick, hence the name ‘ice pick scar’. Such scars can be challenging to treat and specialty scar treatments are usually required to target these deep pitted scars.
ROLLING SCARS are wide depressions that have peaks and valleys across the skin. They happen when fibrous bands of tissue develop between the skin and the subcutaneous tissue below. The bands pull the epidermis in an irregular fashion, causing depressions on the skin.
Effective treatment for acne scars
INFINI is an advanced minimally-invasive treatment that allows the doctor to control the treatment depth and energy levels to customise an effective acne scar treatment approach.
Unlike traditional scar treatments such as CO2 skin resurfacing lasers that are not suitable for dark-skinned patients, INFINI is suitable for all skin types or tan.
INFINI uses a patented microneedle system to reach a depth of up to 3.5mm below the skin. This ensures that the deepest acne scars can be treated effectively. For deep acne scars, the only way to smoothen out the depression is to go below the scar tissue to stimulate collagen production in the area. With new collagen in the skin, it pushes up the depression to match the surrounding skin.
INFINI is by far one of the most effective acne scar treatments available in Singapore. A single treatment allows the doctor to treat the entire thickness of the dermis. This makes INFINI treatment about 4 times more effective than skin resurfacing laser that merely ablates the top layer of the skin.
