It is often said that teenage years are the best years of your life. This may not be true for everyone – for some people, they have to struggle between embarrassing skin problems and forking out huge sum of money for a proper teen skin care regime. Teenagers are particularly concerned about their body image because of the intense peer pressure for a need to fit in.
There is a strong correlation between body image and self-esteem among teenagers. In this digital age where information is freely accessible and private lives of their favourite actors are on social media, they are exposed to unrealistic images of beauty.
As teens get older, it is normal for them to become more interested in their appearance especially when they experience rapid changes in their bodies during puberty. Some teens gain fat, develop acne, oily skin, excessive sweating, or even warts.
“As a doctor, I have seen several cases of teenagers who want to resolve these medical issues but have limited budget. Teen skin care may not necessarily mean that you spend thousands of dollars on some creams that don’t work.” says Dr. Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics. “So I have designed several treatments to help teenagers, or even people with budget constraints to effectively resolve their issues without burning a hole in their pockets.”
Acne is perhaps one of the most common skin issue that most teens have. As hormone levels rise and bodies change, their skin also changes. They experience breakouts characterised by whiteheads, blackheads, and inflammed pimples. They usually develop in the cheeks and on the forehead. “Other than the hormonal changes, stress associated with your lifestyle can also contribute to your active acne.” says Dr. Siew.
RADIUM TEEN SKIN CARE SOLUTION “Acne is a chronic condition that can be expensive to treat,” says Dr. Siew. “That is why I designed a mild, yet effective program to clear your acne.” This non-laser acne-clearing program targets the root of your acne problem, using a multi-pronged approach. It eradicates pimples, improve clogged pores, and clear dark, red acne scars using medical-grade treatments. This intensive 8-session program consists of ultrasonic cleansing, LED Blue Light, LED Red Light, and fruit acid peels to keep stubborn acne at bay.
For those who are willing to dig deeper into their pockets to undergo a unique program to remove acne scars and provide the most effective method to regain your clear skin, you can consider our Acne Clear Ultimate program. It features 10 sessions of our most popular anti-acne treatments comprising of ultrasonic cleansing, AquaPeel, LED Blue Light, LED Red Light, fruit peels and Spectra Carbon Laser Peel to reduce oil production, acne and acne marks. The program also has an Anti-Redness Gold Toning laser to reduce unsightly red acne scars.
If you only have oily skin but you are not breaking out, you should not over-wash your face. There is a tendency to wash your face too much to keep it clean and smooth. If you do so, you are probably doing more harm than good to your skin because it will signal your skin to produce more oil. It also compromises your skin’s natural protective oil if you wash more than you should and you end up getting acne break outs.
Avoid using skincare products that contain SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol. These will dry out your skin very easily. For a daily cleanser, choose a facial wash that does not have added fragrance. Try to find a gentle cleanser that contains salicylic acid and peppermint. These are not too harsh on your skin while giving your complexion a deep clean.
RADIUM TEEN SKIN CARE SOLUTION If you feel that your oily skin condition is severe and wish to turn to medical help, you can consider laser treatments. Spectra Carbon Laser Peel uses the synergy between laser energy and a layer of carbon applied onto the skin. The carbon penetrates deep into the pores and the laser heats up the carbon to give a holistic, gentle yet effective treatment. Beneficial for people with acne, large pores, oily skin, dull skin tone, and pigments.
On the other extreme, there could be teens who get dry skin during puberty. Their skin may flake, peel or crack due to insufficient moisture.
Drink lots of water (at least 2 litres a day) to hydrate your skin. Avoid excessive sun and make sure you apply sunblock of at least SPF30 to protect your skin from the harmful UVA rays.
RADIUM TEEN SKIN CARE SOLUTION “Consider using Serenity Skin Restoration Creme.” says Dr. Siew. “I designed and developed this nutirents-packed moisturiser to keep the skin healthy. It contains plant oils and honey-suckle extract to calm and hydrate the skin.”, he added.
“The most attractive feature of our skincare products is that the prices are a fraction of the price of your branded skincare products even though our products contain as much or more active ingredients.”
For people who are willing to invest a little more for a beautiful, hydrated, glowing skin, you can consider Restylane Skinboosters treatment. It works by delivering hyaluronic acid under the skin using a series of micro-injections. It maintains hydration in the skin by absorbing water and bringing deep, long-lasting hydration to the treated areas. Restylane Skinboosters also creates luminous, glowing skin and reduces appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
One of the growing pains that teenagers have to struggle with is to sweat excessively. Be in on the palms of your hands, under your arms, or in your scalp, you often find yourself drenched in perspiration. Sweating is part of puberty. When our bodies change, more than 3 million sweat glands become more active.
The easiest and most convenient way to tackle excessive sweating is with an antiperspirant. Most antiperspirants contain aluminium salts. These salts form a plug to prevent the site from perspiring. You can buy an antiperspirant over the counter at a pharmacy. If the over the counter brands don’t seem to work, consult a doctor to discuss other solutions.
RADIUM TEEN SKIN CARE SOLUTION One of the most common ways to treat excessive sweating is using Botox. Botox is injected into the armpits, hands, feet, head and face. Tiny amounts of the purified botulinum A toxin blocks the release of a neurotransmitter or a brain chemical called acetylcholine, which is usually associated with sweating. Research has shown that there is an 85% decrease in sweating when used to treat underarm excessive sweating. In the case of the same treatment on the hands, it has shown about 90% efficacy. However, there are some side effects such as temporary pain and weakness in the hands. Talk to your doctor to find out more about the available options to treat excessive sweating.
