Ways To Reduce Wrinkles

Wrinkles become more visible as we age. They are a natural part of the aging process. As we age, we lose collagen and our skin becomes thinner, less elastic, and drier. Our bodies are unable to keep up with the collagen production and this leads to wrinkles, creases, and folds on the skin.

Other than the natural process of aging, static wrinkles can also sort of etched on your face if you make repetitive movements of your face. So if you are someone who smiles or laughs a lot, you will probably see rather deep-set nasolabial folds on both sides of your face.

As you become older, you are probably more concerned about fighting the wrinkles on your face than planning your birthday party. At some point in time, you realise that  you are fighting a losing battle trying to prevent any signs of aging. To help you to delay aging and make you look younger than you actually are, Dr Siew, Medical Director, Radium Medical Aesthetics will share some tips on what really works to reduce fine lines on the skin.

Tip 1 – Stay Out Of The Sun

“We cannot overemphasize the importance of avoiding the sun.” says Dr Siew. How healthy our skin is depends very much on our environment and lifestyle choices that we make. “It can be almost impossible to avoid the sun in this little sunny island. However, you should make sure you apply sufficient sunscreen of at least SPF 30 at least 30 minutes before you leave the house. Buy sunscreen that says “broad-spectrum” because that gives you more coverage from the different UV rays.”, Dr Siew continued.

Tip 2 – Consume More Omega-3

We all know the laundry list of benefits that omega-3 has. But do you know that other than lowering triglyceride levels in your blood and alleviate rheumatoid arthritis, this essential fatty acid is also an important component to nourish the skin, keep it plump and maintain its elasticity? This also means that by consuming more foods high in omega-3, you can reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Foods high in omega-3 are flaxseed oil, fish oil, walnuts, fatty fish, spinach and soy beans. Stock up on these items today for a more youthful appearance!

Tip 3 – Eat More Cocoa

Good news for chocolate lovers! As if we need more reasons to love our Godiva, there is one more reason: Cocoa contains an antioxidant called flavanol which provides some resistance to the sun’s UV rays. Research has shown that there is a delay in the onset of redness of the skin when people consume cocoa on a regular basis. Flavanols can be found in various types of plants. However, the concentration is the highest in cocoa beans. The flavonoids protects the skin and counter free radicals generated from exposure to the sun’s UV rays.

Here’s the thing – You will probably reap more benefits if you consume dark chocolates as the amount of cocoa is higher compared to milk chocolates. The sugar level in milk chocolate is higher and it probably does more harm than good if you eat too much milk chocolate.

You no longer need to feel guilty the next time you indulge in some dark chocolates!

Tip 4 – Sleep Facing Up

Lying with your face squashed on your bed will leave your face puffy because of the accumulation of fluid. Furthermore, you will leave creases and marks on your face. Over time, these creases may remain etched on your face permanently as wrinkles. Experts from the American Academy of Dermatology recommend sleeping on your back to avoid premature facial lines.

Tip 5 – Regular Skincare Maintenance

No amount of ‘healthy’ food you eat or exercises you do will help you prevent wrinkles from appearing on your face. It is important receive regular skincare maintenance from your doctor if you want to keep your wrinkles at bay.

At some point in time, your skins’s natural collagen production slows down and you need some medical intervention to help you keep your skin clear and smooth. “There are treatments suitable for everyone who want to incorporate some treatments into their skincare regime. Some treatments that are popular among my patients are laser resurfacing and botox and fillers. For the less adventurous, you can always come in for a relaxing anti-aging facial treatment to remove dead skin cells and help reduce the appearance of fine lines on your face.”, says Dr. Siew.
