Gold PTT Acne Treatment
Treating Stubborn Acne with Gold Nanoparticles
Why do overactive sebaceous glands cause acne?
Although sebum is important for skin health, overactive sebaceous glands are often the root causes of acne. In order for acne to form, 2 things need to occur: Excessive production of sebum and blockage of hair follicles. Comedones, whiteheads and blackheads are usually the direct result of the clogging of the hair follicles. When the clogged pores are colonised by bacteria, inflammation occurs and acne forms. It is these overactive sebaceous glands which Gold PTT treatment targets.
How does Gold PTT treat acne vulgaris?
Photothermal therapy, or PTT is a type of light therapy which uses electromagnetic radiation, commonly in the near infrared wavelengths in the form of lasers, for the treatment of various medical conditions including cancer.
PTT is similar to another older treatment for acne, known as photodynamic therapy or PDT. Unlike PDT, PTT does not require oxygen to interact with the target cells or tissues. In other words, PTT is more efficacious at the deeper layer of the skin. Also, PTT causes less redness in the skin because longer wavelength lasers, which has less energy, is used.
Although this treatment was approved by US FDA in 2018 for the purpose of acne treatment, it was only offered by aesthetic clinics in Singapore in 2020.
