Pico Laser

Harnessing Pico Laser Technology for Treatment of Pigmentation, Acne Scars

Achieving flawless, younger-looking skin is no longer impossible with PicoSure laser. The patented technology allows the laser beams to penetrate deeper layers of the skin dermis to stimulate collagen production and shatter pigments more effectively.

What is Pico laser?

Pico laser delivers ultrashort laser pulses in picoseconds, as compared to the traditional Q-switched laser, which delivers laser pulses in nanoseconds. It is a 755nm wavelength Alexandrite laser that leverages on picosecond laser technology to manage the treatment of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and tattoo with highly effective results.

PicoSure laser yields better results for acne scar treatment

Pico laser delivers short laser pulses that are 1,000 times shorter in duration than a traditional Q-switched laser, more laser pulses can be delivered with each pulse staying on the skin for a shorter duration. This means that less heat is generated in the skin, causing significantly less damage to the skin tissue.

Through its targeted mode of energy delivery, PicoSure is able to reach the dermis to stimulate collagen and elastin production with increased precision, causing minimal damage to the surrounding tissue.

Effective solution for pigmentation with PicoSure laser

Picosure laser gives excellent results when treating a wide range of skin pigmentation issues such as freckles, sun spots, and melasma. While traditional lasers use photothermal energy to shatter the pigments, PicoSure laser eliminates the stubborn pigments using short pulses by leveraging on the picosecond technology. Shorter exposure of laser significantly reduces the risks of burning, scarring and other adverse side effects relating to traditional laser treatments.

Tattoo removal made easier with PicoSure laser

PicoSure Laser in Singapore is an FDA-approved technology for several indication, including tattoo removal.

Although PicoSure laser is an excellent treatment for skin rejuvenation and hyperpigmentation, its strength lies in its capability in shattering tattoo ink particles effectively. By targeting the laser on the tattoo ink particles in picoseconds, it results in more effective clearance of stubborn ink colours such as orange, yellow, red, and green. With PicoSure laser, tattoo removal has become a lot easier with less downtime.

PicoSure Focus Lens Array

What makes PicoSure Laser stand out from the competition is its patented Focus Lens Array.
The Focus Lens Array uses a diffractive lens to rejuvenate the skin with virtually no downtime. It allows us to achieve better results with pigmentation, skin texture, and acne scars. It does so by concentrating energy into tiny spots that is 20x more powerful than normal lens. This high energy creates micro-injury into the epidermis after the treatment by creating intra-epidermal cavities, known as Laser Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB), with formation of new collagen and elastin. At the same time, pressure waves are generated to stimulate the skin to induce an inflammatory response to start the healing process.

What is Pico laser used for?

Pico laser is commonly used to improve pigmentation, uneven skin tone, tattoo pigment, and certain types of skin discoloration. It delivers ultra-short pulses of laser energy into the skin, helping to break pigment particles into smaller fragments so they can be gradually cleared by the body’s natural processes.

Pico laser may be used for concerns such as:

  • Freckles and sun spots
  • Age spots and pigmentation
  • Melasma, where suitable
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Acne marks
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Tattoo removal
  • Dull or tired-looking skin
  • Enlarged pores and uneven skin texture, depending on the laser mode used

Beyond pigment removal, some pico laser systems may also help stimulate collagen remodelling, which can support smoother skin texture and improved radiance over time.

A doctor’s assessment is important because not all pigmentation is the same. The treatment settings and number of sessions required will depend on the type of pigmentation, depth of pigment, skin type, and whether the concern is related to sun damage, hormones, inflammation, or tattoo ink.

Frequently asked questions about Pico laser treatment in Singapore

Cost of Pico Laser Treatment in Singapore

It depends on several factors such as the area to be treated, the condition to be treated and the function of the laser that will be used. For pigment removal on the face, you can expect the treatment to cost between S$300 and S$700. Tattoo removal can vary greatly because of the size of the tattoo. A small tattoo can cost about S$300 and a large tattoo can cost about S$1800.

The number of sessions required also affects the overall cost. Superficial pigmentation may respond within fewer sessions, while deeper or recurring pigmentation may require a longer treatment plan with regular maintenance. In some cases, Pico laser may also be combined with other treatments such as brightening skincare, chemical peels, BBL/IPL, skinboosters, or other laser treatments depending on the skin condition and desired outcome.

At Radium Medical Aesthetics, a consultation is recommended before treatment so that the doctor can assess your pigmentation type, skin condition, suitability, and treatment goals. This allows us to recommend a personalised treatment plan and provide a clearer cost estimate based on your individual needs.

What is the downtime of the treatment?

Downtime after Pico laser treatment in Singapore is generally minimal, although it can vary depending on the treatment setting, skin condition, pigmentation type, and area treated. For most patients, the skin may appear mildly red, warm, or slightly sensitive shortly after treatment, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects usually settle within a few hours to 1 to 2 days.

When treating pigmentation or darker spots, the treated areas may temporarily darken before gradually flaking or lightening over the next few days. Mild dryness, roughness, or slight scabbing may also occur, depending on the intensity of the treatment. It is important not to pick or scratch the skin during this period to reduce the risk of irritation or pigmentation changes.

Most patients can return to normal daily activities shortly after Pico laser treatment. However, sun protection is especially important after treatment, as the skin may be more sensitive to UV exposure. Your doctor may also advise you to avoid harsh exfoliants, retinoids, strong active skincare, sauna, swimming, and strenuous exercise for a few days while the skin recovers.

How many PicoSure treatment sessions do I need?

The number of PicoSure treatment sessions required depends on the type of concern being treated, the depth and severity of pigmentation, your skin type, treatment settings, and how your skin responds.

For general skin brightening, uneven skin tone, and mild pigmentation, some patients may notice improvement after a few sessions. For more stubborn concerns such as melasma, deeper pigmentation, acne marks, or tattoo pigment, a longer treatment plan may be required.

In general, a series of 3 to 6 sessions may be recommended for pigmentation and overall skin rejuvenation, while tattoo removal or more complex pigmentation concerns may require more sessions. Treatments are usually spaced a few weeks apart to allow the skin to recover and for pigment to be gradually cleared by the body.

A doctor’s assessment is important to determine the most suitable number of sessions, treatment interval, and expected outcome based on your individual skin condition and goals.

How do I care for my skin after PicoSure laser treatment?

After PicoSure laser treatment, it is important to keep the skin calm, protected, and well moisturised while it recovers. Mild redness, warmth, sensitivity, dryness, or temporary darkening of pigmentation may occur after treatment, and these usually improve gradually over the next few days.

For the first few days, avoid harsh skincare products such as exfoliating acids, retinoids, scrubs, strong brightening products, or any active ingredients that may irritate the skin. Use a gentle cleanser, apply a soothing moisturiser, and avoid picking, rubbing, or scratching the treated areas, especially if the pigmentation appears darker, dry, or slightly flaky.

Sun protection is especially important after PicoSure laser treatment. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and avoid prolonged sun exposure, as the skin may be more sensitive to UV rays during the recovery period. You may also be advised to avoid sauna, swimming, strenuous exercise, alcohol, and heat exposure for a few days, depending on your skin response and treatment intensity.

Your doctor will provide specific aftercare instructions based on your skin condition and treatment settings. Following proper aftercare helps support healing, reduce irritation, and minimise the risk of post-treatment pigmentation changes.

Am I a suitable candidate for Pico laser treatment in Singapore?

You may be a suitable candidate for Pico laser treatment if you are concerned with pigmentation, uneven skin tone, sun spots, freckles, acne marks, dull-looking skin, or certain types of tattoo pigment. Pico laser may also be considered for patients who wish to improve overall skin clarity and radiance with minimal downtime.

However, suitability depends on several factors, including your skin type, pigmentation type, medical history, skin sensitivity, and whether you have any active skin conditions. Not all pigmentation responds the same way to Pico laser. For example, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and deeper pigmentation may require a more cautious and personalised approach to reduce the risk of irritation or worsening pigmentation.

Pico laser treatment may not be suitable if you have active skin infections, open wounds, severe eczema, recent sunburn, uncontrolled medical conditions, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients who are taking certain medications or have a tendency to develop post-inflammatory pigmentation should also be carefully assessed before treatment.

At Radium Medical Aesthetics, a consultation with a doctor is recommended before undergoing Pico laser treatment in Singapore. Your doctor will assess your skin condition, pigmentation type, treatment goals, and suitability before recommending a personalised treatment plan.

Are the results from PicoSure laser treatment permanent?

The results from PicoSure laser treatment are not always permanent, as pigmentation can recur depending on the underlying cause, sun exposure, hormones, skin inflammation, and lifestyle factors. While PicoSure laser can help break down existing pigment and improve the appearance of sun spots, freckles, acne marks, uneven skin tone, and certain types of pigmentation, it does not prevent new pigmentation from forming in the future.

Some pigmentation concerns, such as sun spots or freckles, may remain improved for a longer period with good sun protection and proper skincare. However, conditions such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may be more prone to recurrence and often require ongoing maintenance and careful skin management.

To help prolong results, patients are advised to use daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, avoid excessive sun exposure, follow a suitable skincare routine, and attend maintenance treatments where recommended. Your doctor will assess your pigmentation type and advise on the expected longevity of results and the best way to maintain your skin after treatment.
