Vein Removal Treatment
Reducing Appearance of Visible Veins with Combination Lasers
Veins appear blue in color because they bring deoxygenated blood from various parts of the body back to the heart. For many Asians who have lighter skin tone, it is normal to have visible veins on our body, especially on the face, arms and legs.
Some people may also notice small veins appearing on the face or legs as they become older. These spider veins are small, damaged veins that can be blue, red or purple. They can appear in the form of webs, branches or even just faint lines that run across the face or leg. These spider veins are usually benign and don’t cause any discomfort to the person.
Most visible veins are benign and are not a cause for concern. However, if the veins are prominent on the face and legs, they can look like bruises and are not visually appealing.
Causes of visible veins
Some possible causes of visible veins are:
REGULAR EXERCISE When we exercise, our blood pressure increases as a result of circulating more blood in the body. Over time, this can widen the veins, making them look more obvious.
HOT WEATHER Just like undergoing regular, strenuous exercises, hot weather can increase blood flow in the veins, making them look more obvious over time.
SKIN TONE Naturally fair and have translucent skin allow light to pass through and allow veins to become more visible through the skin. As such, fair-skinned Asians are more likely to have are more likely to see blue or purple veins through their skin.
BEING OVERWEIGHT The excess fatty tissues that exert constant pressure on the veins may result in enhanced vein definition, especially in the legs.
WEARING TIGHT CLOTHING Wearing tight clothing may restrict blood flow and place pressure in your veins, making them more visible. This often occurs around the waist, thighs, and legs.
Combining laser treatments to reduce appearance of veins
At Radium Medical Aesthetics, selected laser and light-based treatments may be used to improve visible vascular concerns such as broken capillaries, facial redness, spider veins, and visible blood vessels. These concerns may appear as fine red lines, diffuse redness, or small visible veins, commonly around the nose, cheeks, chin, or other areas of the face and body.
Depending on the type, size, depth, colour, and location of the vessels, treatment options may include BBL/IPL-based technology or vascular laser modes such as long-pulsed Nd YAG laser. BBL or IPL-based treatments are often considered for more superficial redness and fine broken capillaries, while long-pulsed Nd may be suitable for selected deeper or more defined vessels.
These treatments work by delivering light or laser energy to the targeted blood vessels, helping to reduce their appearance over time as the body gradually clears the treated vessels. A doctor’s assessment is required to determine the most suitable approach, as results vary depending on the skin condition, vessel type, and individual suitability.
How Does vein Removal Laser Work?
Our vein removal laser treatment uses a targeted wavelength of light to address visible veins, broken capillaries, and other superficial vascular concerns in the skin. The laser energy is absorbed by haemoglobin within the blood vessel, generating controlled heat that causes the vessel wall to coagulate and collapse. Over time, the treated vessel is gradually cleared by the body’s natural processes, helping the skin appear clearer, smoother, and more even-looking.
The treatment is designed to be precise, targeting selected blood vessels while minimising unnecessary impact on the surrounding skin and tissue. Laser settings can also be adjusted according to the size, depth, colour, and location of the vessels, allowing the doctor to customise the treatment based on each patient’s condition and suitability.
Vein removal laser treatment is minimally invasive and generally well tolerated. Some patients may experience mild, brief discomfort during the procedure, along with temporary redness, swelling, or sensitivity after treatment. Most patients are able to resume normal daily activities shortly after the session, although sun protection and aftercare are important to support recovery.
How many sessions are required?
For vein removal laser treatment, the number of sessions required depends on the size, depth, colour, location, and number of visible vessels being treated. Some small broken capillaries or superficial facial veins may improve after 1 to 2 sessions, while more extensive redness, spider veins, or deeper visible vessels may require several sessions for more noticeable improvement.
Treatments are usually spaced a few weeks apart to allow the skin to recover and for the body to gradually clear the treated vessels. As vascular concerns can be influenced by factors such as sun exposure, skin sensitivity, genetics, rosacea, ageing, or hormonal changes, maintenance treatments may be recommended for patients who are prone to recurrence.
A consultation with an aesthetic doctor in Singapore is recommended to assess the type of visible veins and advise on a suitable treatment plan based on your skin condition and expected response.
Is Vein Removal Laser Treatment Safe?
Yes, vein removal laser treatment is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified and experienced doctor, after proper assessment of the skin and visible vessels.
The treatment uses targeted laser energy to heat and reduce selected blood vessels while minimising unnecessary impact on the surrounding skin. Safety depends on several factors, including the type of laser used, wavelength, treatment settings, vessel size and depth, skin type, treatment area, and the patient’s medical history.
Common temporary side effects may include redness, mild swelling, warmth, tenderness, bruising, or slight darkening of the treated vessels. These usually settle over the next few days. Less commonly, patients may experience blistering, pigmentation changes, scabbing, or skin irritation, especially if the area is exposed to sun or if aftercare instructions are not followed.
A doctor’s assessment is important before treatment to determine suitability, especially for patients with darker skin types, sensitive skin, active skin infections, a tendency for pigmentation, pregnancy, certain medical conditions, or those taking photosensitising medications. Proper eye protection and aftercare are also important to ensure safe treatment.
