Injectable Treatments for Hydration, Skin Quality and a Healthier-Looking Glow

Skin boosters are injectable treatments designed primarily to improve skin quality rather than change the shape or structure of the face.

Traditional hyaluronic acid (HA) skin boosters use a soft, highly hydrating form of hyaluronic acid that is placed in small amounts within the skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains water, helping dehydrated skin appear smoother, more supple and refreshed.

Unlike conventional dermal fillers, which are usually used to restore volume or enhance facial contours, skin boosters are generally distributed more superficially across the treatment area.

They may help improve:

  • skin hydration
  • smoothness
  • fine dehydration lines
  • suppleness
  • texture
  • overall skin radiance

Skin booster treatment may be considered for people whose skin remains dry, dull, rough or less supple despite a good topical skincare routine.

At Radium Medical Aesthetics, the skin is assessed before treatment to determine whether a traditional HA skin booster or another skin-quality injectable may be more appropriate.

What Is a Skin Booster?

A skin booster is an injectable treatment designed to improve the condition and quality of the skin.

Unlike dermal fillers, skin boosters are not primarily used to create projection, replace facial volume or alter facial contours.

Instead, treatment focuses on improving qualities such as:

  • hydration
  • smoothness
  • suppleness
  • fine superficial lines
  • skin texture
  • luminosity

Many traditional skin boosters contain hyaluronic acid, but the term “skin booster” is now used quite broadly.

This is why it is important to understand that not every injectable marketed for skin quality works in the same way.

Are All Skin Boosters the Same?

No.

Today, “skin booster” is sometimes used as a general term for several different categories of injectable skin treatments.

The ingredients, mechanisms and treatment objectives can differ considerably.

HYALURONIC ACID SKIN BOOSTERS Traditional HA skin boosters are primarily used to improve hydration and skin smoothness. Small amounts of hyaluronic acid are distributed within the skin to help retain moisture.

They may be considered for:

  • dehydrated skin
  • dull-looking skin
  • fine dehydration lines
  • rough texture
  • reduced skin suppleness

POLYNUCLEOTIDE INJECTABLES Polynucleotide or PN injectable treatments take a different approach. Rather than primarily acting as a hydrator, PN treatments are used to support skin repair and improve aspects of skin quality. Depending on the patient’s concerns, PN treatment may be considered instead of — or sometimes alongside — a traditional HA skin booster.

HIGHLY PURIFIED POLYNUCLEOTIDE INJECTABLES Highly purified PN formulations represent another category of regenerative skin injectable. These may be considered where concerns extend beyond dehydration to include skin texture, elasticity and visible age-related skin changes.

BIO-REMODELLING HYALURONIC ACID INJECTABLES Some injectable treatments contain relatively high concentrations of hyaluronic acid but are designed differently from traditional skin boosters. Rather than being distributed through many small injection points across the skin, these products may be administered at selected points and used for broader skin remodelling.

Which Skin Injectable Is Right for Me?

There is no single injectable that is best for every skin concern.

During consultation, your doctor may assess factors such as:

  • age
  • skin thickness
  • hydration
  • elasticity
  • pigmentation
  • texture
  • scarring
  • facial volume
  • degree of skin laxity

Broadly:

SKIN BOOSTERS primarily improve hydration and skin quality.

DERMAL FILLERS primarily address facial volume and structure.

POLYNUCLEOTIDES INJECTABLES are used as regenerative skin-quality treatments.

ENERGY-BASED TREATMENTS such as ultrasound, radiofrequency, light and lasers address different layers and concerns.

Treating dehydration, pigmentation, volume loss and skin laxity as if they were the same problem can lead to inappropriate treatment selection.

How Do HA Skin Boosters Work?

Hyaluronic acid is naturally present within the skin and other tissues in the body.

One of its important properties is its ability to bind water.

As skin changes with age, environmental exposure and other factors, it may become drier and less supple.

During HA skin booster treatment, small amounts of an appropriate hyaluronic acid formulation are placed within the skin.

Rather than creating noticeable facial volume, the aim is to improve hydration and produce skin that appears:

  • smoother
  • more supple
  • refreshed
  • better hydrated

The effect is different from dermal filler treatment, which is generally used to restore volume or provide structural support.

What Can Skin Boosters Help With?

DRY OR DEHYDRATED SKIN Topical moisturisers help support the skin barrier from the surface. HA skin boosters work differently by placing hyaluronic acid within the skin. They may therefore be considered in patients who continue to experience dehydration or reduced suppleness despite regular skincare.

FINE DEHYDRATION LINES Loss of hydration can make superficial lines appear more noticeable. Improved hydration and suppleness may soften the appearance of some fine dehydration-related lines. Deeper wrinkles caused by facial movement, volume loss or skin laxity require a different treatment approach.

DULL OR ROUGH SKIN Better hydration can make the skin surface appear smoother and more refreshed.

However, if uneven texture is mainly caused by acne scarring, enlarged pores, pigmentation or sun damage, other treatments may be required.

ENLARGED PORES Skin boosters cannot literally “close” pores. However, improvements in hydration and surface texture may make pores appear less conspicuous in some patients. Where enlarged pores are associated with oily skin, acne scars or significant textural changes, treatments such as RF microneedling or lasers may be more appropriate.

ACNE-SCARRED SKIN Skin boosters may improve the general hydration and quality of skin surrounding acne scars. However, they should not be considered a primary treatment for deeper atrophic acne scars. Scar-specific treatments such as subcision, fractional CO₂ laser, TCA CROSS or RF microneedling may be required depending on the scar type.

Where Can Skin Boosters Be Injected?

Skin boosters may be used in areas where hydration and skin quality are concerns.

FACE The face is the most commonly treated area. Treatment may be distributed across areas such as the cheeks and lower face to improve general hydration and skin smoothness.

UNDER-EYE AREA The skin around the eyes is thin and may show dehydration and fine lines relatively early. Selected skin-quality injectables may be suitable for the peri-orbital area, although not every skin booster is appropriate around the eyes. Product selection and injection technique are therefore particularly important.

NECK The neck can develop dryness, crepiness and fine horizontal lines. Skin-quality treatments may be incorporated into a broader neck rejuvenation plan.

DECOLLETAGE Sun exposure and dehydration can contribute to visible changes across the upper chest. Skin boosters may be considered alongside treatments targeting pigmentation or photodamage.

HANDS Changes in hydration and skin quality can contribute to an aged appearance of the hands. Injectable skin treatments may be considered selectively to improve skin quality on the back of the hands.

Skin Booster vs Dermal Filler: What Is the Difference?

Although many skin boosters and dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, their purpose is different.

SKIN BOOSTER Primarily aims to improve:

  • hydration
  • skin texture
  • suppleness
  • fine dehydration lines
  • overall skin quality

DERMAL FILLER Primarily aims to:

  • restore facial volume
  • provide structural support
  • improve facial contours
  • enhance selected facial features

A patient with dehydrated skin but good facial volume may benefit from a skin booster without needing filler.

Conversely, a patient with significant volume loss may not achieve the desired structural improvement from a skin booster alone.

Skin Booster vs Polynucleotide Treatment

Traditional HA skin boosters and polynucleotide injectables are both injected into the skin, but their primary purposes differ.

HA SKIN BOOSTER Primarily used for:

  • hydration
  • skin suppleness
  • fine dehydration lines
  • surface smoothness

POLYNUCLEOTIDE INJECTABLE Used as a regenerative skin-quality treatment to support:

  • skin repair
  • elasticity
  • texture
  • overall skin condition

Neither treatment is automatically better. A younger patient whose main concern is dehydration may have very different treatment needs from someone experiencing thinner skin, textural changes and other visible signs of ageing. The appropriate treatment depends on the skin condition and treatment objective.

Skin Booster vs Bio-Remodelling HA Injectables

Both may contain hyaluronic acid, but they are not necessarily the same type of treatment.

Traditional skin boosters typically distribute smaller amounts of HA across multiple areas to improve hydration and skin quality.

Bio-remodelling HA injectables may use different formulations, concentrations and injection patterns with the aim of producing broader changes in skin quality.

Your doctor can advise which approach is more suitable based on your skin and treatment goals.

Skin Quality Is More Than Hydration

Healthy-looking skin depends on more than moisture alone.

When assessing skin quality, our doctors may consider:

  • hydration
  • texture
  • elasticity
  • fine lines
  • pore visibility
  • pigmentation
  • redness
  • acne scars
  • sun damage
  • skin laxity

A skin booster may be useful where dehydration is an important part of the problem.

However, it cannot replace treatments specifically designed for pigmentation, vascular redness, deeper acne scars, facial volume loss or structural skin laxity.

For patients with several concerns, a combination treatment plan may sometimes be more appropriate.

The aim is not to perform as many treatments as possible, but to identify which aspect of the skin needs treatment and select the appropriate modality for it.

Can Skin Boosters Be Combined With BBL or Laser Treatments?

Yes, in selected patients.

Skin boosters and light- or laser-based treatments address different aspects of skin quality.

For example, a skin booster may primarily improve hydration while a treatment such as BBL or an appropriate laser addresses concerns such as pigmentation, redness or uneven colour.

Combining treatments does not automatically produce better results.

The appropriate sequence and interval depend on:

  • the treatments being performed
  • skin condition
  • expected downtime
  • individual treatment goals

Your doctor can advise whether combination treatment is appropriate and how the procedures should be scheduled.

How Many Skin Booster Sessions Do I Need?

The number and frequency of treatments depend on:

  • product used
  • degree of dehydration
  • age
  • skin condition
  • treatment area
  • response to previous treatment
  • other treatments being performed

Some patients may undergo an initial series of sessions several weeks apart before moving to maintenance treatment.

Other injectables use different protocols.

Rather than following the same schedule for everyone, treatment intervals should be based on the product and individual skin condition.

Dr Siew Tuck Wah's Approach to Skin Quality

Dr Siew Tuck Wah believes skin quality should be assessed separately from facial shape and volume.

A patient may have good facial proportions but still experience concerns such as dehydration, texture changes, pigmentation or reduced elasticity.

Conversely, improving hydration alone will not correct structural volume loss or significant skin laxity.

For this reason, Dr Siew assesses the underlying cause of the concern before recommending whether a skin booster, polynucleotide injectable, laser, energy-based treatment or another approach may be appropriate.

The goal is to improve the aspects of the skin that actually require treatment rather than applying the same injectable to every patient.

Skin Booster Treatment at Radium Medical Aesthetics

Skin concerns that appear similar on the surface can have different underlying causes.

Dryness may require improved hydration.

Uneven colour may require a pigment or vascular treatment.

Fine lines may arise from dehydration, facial movement or collagen changes.

Changes in facial shape may instead reflect structural ageing.

At Radium Medical Aesthetics, injectable skin treatments are recommended following medical assessment.

Our approach is to identify the aspect of skin quality that requires treatment and determine whether a skin booster, regenerative injectable, energy-based treatment or combination approach is appropriate.

Radium Medical Aesthetics is located at Suntec City, Singapore.

Frequently Asked Questions About Skin Boosters in Singapore

Is a Skin Booster the Same as a Dermal Filler?

No.

Although both may contain hyaluronic acid, they are designed for different purposes.

Skin boosters primarily improve hydration and skin quality, while dermal fillers are generally used to restore volume, provide structural support or enhance facial contours.

Is Rejuran or PN Treatment a Skin Booster?

The term “skin booster” is sometimes used broadly in marketing, but PN injectables and conventional HA skin boosters work differently.

Traditional HA skin boosters focus primarily on hydration.

PN treatments are used as regenerative skin-quality injectables that support processes associated with skin repair and overall skin condition.

Which Is Better: a Skin Booster or PN Injectable?

Neither is universally better.

The appropriate choice depends on the concern being treated.

For example, persistent dehydration may favour an HA-focused approach, while another patient with broader skin-quality concerns may be assessed for a PN injectable.

Can Skin Boosters Make My Face Look Fuller?

Traditional skin boosters are not designed to create the structural volume associated with dermal fillers.

Temporary swelling can occur after treatment, but the objective is improvement in skin hydration and quality rather than changing facial contours.

Can Skin Boosters Help Enlarged Pores?

They may make pores appear less noticeable in some patients by improving hydration and skin texture.

However, they do not physically close pores.

Where enlarged pores are related to oily skin, acne scarring or more significant textural changes, other treatments may be more appropriate.

Can Skin Boosters Treat Acne Scars?

Skin boosters may improve the quality and hydration of skin surrounding acne scars, but they are not a primary treatment for deeper atrophic scars.

Subcision, RF microneedling, fractional CO₂ laser or TCA CROSS may be recommended depending on scar type.

Can Skin Boosters Be Injected Under the Eyes?

Certain skin-quality injectables may be suitable for the under-eye region.

However, the area requires careful product selection because the skin is thin and not every injectable is appropriate there.

Who May Be Suitable for Skin Booster Treatment?

Skin booster treatment may be considered for people concerned about:

  • persistent skin dehydration
  • dull-looking skin
  • fine dehydration lines
  • rough texture
  • reduced suppleness
  • early skin-quality changes

The treatment is most appropriate where hydration and skin quality are important contributors to the concern.

Who May Not Be Suitable?

Suitability depends on the individual’s medical history, skin condition and product being considered.

Treatment may need to be postponed or avoided in certain situations, including:

  • active infection
  • inflammation around the treatment area
  • pregnancy or breastfeeding depending on treatment guidance
  • certain medical conditions
  • previous adverse reactions to injectable treatments

Your doctor should review your medical history before proceeding.

How Much Does a Skin Booster Cost in Singapore?

The cost of a skin booster in Singapore depends on factors such as:

  • type of injectable
  • amount used
  • treatment area
  • number of sessions
  • treatment plan

At Radium Medical Aesthetics, skin booster treatments are from S$898 per session.

Your doctor will assess your skin and recommend the appropriate injectable and treatment schedule before treatment.
