Prevalence of adult-onset acne
Acne isn’t just a skin problem that affects teenagers. Many adults continue to experience stubborn, recurrent acne well into adulthood. Studies have shown that there are several factors that may cause breakouts on the face. Stress, lack of sleep, poor diet and hormonal changes can play a part in the development of acne.
Topical treatments are the mainstays of managing mild to moderate acne vulgaris but there has been little improvement of these topical treatments for many decades.
Gold PTT for treating recurrent acne
Gold Photothermal Therapy, or Gold PTT in short, provides us another option for treating acne.
FDA-approved to tackle acne vulgaris, gold nanoparticles have been proven to be effective and safe as an acne treatment. Gold nanoparticles have been demonstrated to be biocompatible with the human body and have a higher affinity for the sebaceous glands of the skin when activated.
During the Gold PTT procedure, a serum containing gold nanoparticles is applied to the skin, and subsequently worked into the skin using ultrasound sonophoresis. This process helps the gold nanoparticles to penetrate the skin quickly and effectively. A special long-pulse laser is then used to heat up the gold nanoparticles, which targets the selective destruction of sebaceous glands, as well as P.acnes bacteria. All this results in the reduction of inflammatory acne lesions forming and decreased acne recurrence.
What is the Gold PTT treatment like?
This 60 minute procedure is usually painless, with patients mostly reporting mild tingly sensations or tiny pin pricks during the treatment.
For best results, a course of 4 treatment sessions, 1 month apart, is recommended. Patients can usually see marked improvement in their acne condition around 4-6 weeks after completion of the 4th treatment session.
- Reduces skin redness and inflammation of acne
- Eliminates acne-causing bacteria
- Destroys p.acnes and overactive sebaceous glands
- Reduces sebum production on the face
